Rajkumar hirani never fails to evoke your Emotions and that’s what this movie is… Emotional. It does have its moments of fun, but it’s mainly emotional.
This biopic of Sanjay Dutt is not actually his full story, but just shows his struggles in life, starting with living up to his father’s expectations, drugs, fear of the underworld, his tada court case. It is a heart warming story of a father son relationship and his relationship with his best friend kamli.
All the news about who is playing Tina munim and who is playing Madhuri Dixit, Were false. There is only 1 romantic angle, that of his girlfriend Ruby, played by Sonam.
The story keeps you glued to your seat, cringe at times, feel angry, feel sad, feel sorry, feel Happy. Basically it evokes a range of Emotions in you which every hirani movie does. But dont expect a 3 idiots or a Munnabhai.
Its a long movie, almost 3 hours, but it doesn’t bore you.
The performances….. Well initially, I felt Ranbir Kapoor was over acting. A couple of scenes make you feel that, and I felt, oh no please don’t make him do this. But he quicky covers up and then you really can’t make out if it’s Ranbir Kapoor or Sanjay Dutt. He is that good. Exceptional.
Another very good performance is that of Vicky Kaushal, who plays kamli, his best friend. He is superb too. Paresh raval as his dad is decent enough.
The other actors, although in small roles, have done their job well…. Jim Sarbh, Sonam Kapoor, Boman Irani, Diya Mirza, Anushka Sharma, Manisha Koirala.
I liked the movie. I would rate it 4 out of 5.
And no, the movie does not glorify Sanjay Dutt. That’s what I feared, but it didn’t. And hence the extra 0.5 rating.
